Marine Energy Wales and Marine Renewables Canada signed an agreement on Wednesday to support development of marine energy through knowledge and experience exchange.
'This agreement demonstrates the commitment to a worldwide marine energy industry and the economic and low carbon opportunities associated with the emerging sector,' Marine Energy Wales said.
Wales is committed to advancing marine technology in the country with €100.4 million of EU structural funding to deploy marine energy capacity, and agreements are in place for three separate tidal stream projects and a number of proposals for significant tidal range projects.
Canada is home to a grid-connected test site with 64 megawatts of capacity.
“The ultimate goal is to create a new low carbon global industry, where skills and knowledge are exportable worldwide,' said David Jones, director of Marine Energy Wales.
Marine energy faces some challenges as it is a new industry, Elisa Obermann, executive director of Marine Renewables Canada said, adding that working together 'can help the industry collaborate on key issues, build partnerships, and share information that will support advancement of the global industry.”
