Scottish cyclists and runners conquered more than 13,000 miles in less than four years on 82 renewable paths in the country, according to data gathered by Scottish Renewables on Saturday.
At 23 Scottish wind farm and hydro developments, outdoor enthusiasts also climbed and descended more than 290 miles – the equivalent of conquering Mount Everest 54 times, according to the app Strava, which lets anyone track their rides and runs via their iPhone, Android or dedicated GPS device.
“We have known for some time that people are putting renewable energy tracks to good use, but this is the first time we have been able to quantify it,' said Joss Blamire, senior policy manager of onshore renewables at Scottish Renewables.
“These 82 routes at 23 sites show how renewable energy developments have benefits way beyond their economic and environmental contributions,' Blamire added.
The app came to the U.K. in 2012 and now is thought to have more than eight million users.
With 1,025 attempts by 351 people, the most popular route in Scottish Renewables’ study was called ‘Whitelee Blue & Red’ at Whitelee wind farm near Glasgow.
