Up to $68.5 million will be made available in funding for early-stage research of advanced vehicle technologies to enable more affordable mobility, strengthen domestic energy security, and enhance U.S. economic growth, U.S. Secretary of Energy Rick Perry announced late Tuesday
The total amount of funding is divided into five categories; batteries and electrification will receive up to $27 million, materials; up to $6 million, technology integration; up to $20 million, engines/fuels: off-road applications; up to $3.5 million and co-optimization of engines and fuels; up to $12 million.
In addition on early Tuesday, the U.S. Undersecretary of Energy Mark Menezes said $23 million in funding would be available for innovative technologies for marine energy devices.
According to the announcement, the Department of Energy’s (DOE’s) Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy will fund research and evaluation of next-generation wave and tidal/current systems.
'Support will be given to early-stage design of power take off and controls integration; and will allow for more efficient consideration of any potential environmental impacts from marine renewable energy development,' according to the announcement.
Furthermore, the DOE will give $19 million to support twelve new cost-shared research projects focused on batteries and vehicle electrification technologies to enable extreme fast charging.
