Commercial operations started at the fourth unit of the Tianwan Nuclear Power Plant (NPP) in China on Saturday, Russia's state atomic energy corporation Rosatom said on Monday.
The commissioning for the fourth unit of the Tianwan NPP has successfully finished and all tests for the third and fourth unit of the plant have been conducted, according to the company’s statement.
'The tests have proved the nuclear island complies with the technical specifications and safety requirements set forth in the contract,' the company said.
Next step will involve the signing of a preliminary acceptance certificate for unit 4 nuclear island -- the main part of a nuclear unit, which consists nuclear fuels and safety systems -- based on the conducted tests in accordance with the general contract for units 3 and 4 of Tianwan NPP.
According to the company, Tianwan NPP will supply electricity generated by the unit 4 which will be connected to the national grid of China at the fixed price quoted by the authorities.
The Russian company will provide a two-year warranty period for the plant operation and following the end of the warranty the unit will be handed over to the Chinese company, Jiangsu Nuclear Power Corporation.
'We can confidently state that the second stage of the Tianwan NPP has been built fully on schedule and it is evidenced by this important event,' said Alexey Bannik, vice president for the Rosatom's Engineering Division projects in China.
Four VVER-1000 power units, which Russia designed and manufactured, are operational at Tianwan NPP. The plant has a capacity of 4,000 megawatts.
The first stage of the plant - units 1 and 2 - was completed in 2007, while electricity production at the third unit started on Dec. 30, 2017.
