Finnish Fortum’s Loviisa nuclear power plant produced 11 percent of Finland's total electricity in 2018, the company announced on Monday.
Fortum said the power plant generated a net total of 7.79 terawatt-hours of carbon-free power.
As a result of the plant’s electricity production, Finland released about 6 million tonnes less carbon dioxide emissions compared to the equivalent amount of fossil fuel-based electricity.
According to Finland's top energy company, in 2018, power outages were reflected in the power plants load factors. Loviisa unit 1’s load factor was 90.9 percent while unit 2 was recorded at 85.9 percent.
Unit 1 underwent a short refueling outage lasting just over 26 days while unit 2 had extensive annual outage of nearly 47 days.
'In 2018, the safety and usability of the power plant was improved by, for example, automation system modernizations and safety improvements of the secondary circuit,' the plant's Deputy Director Thomas Buddas said.
Fortum’s investments in the Loviisa power plant in 2018 totaled approximately €100 million - an increase of €10 million from the €90 million in 2017.
