MHI Vestas installed the first of 44 V164-8.4 MW turbines at Norther in Belgium, which will soon be the largest offshore wind park in the country, the company announced Monday.
'The first V164-8.4 MW turbine has now been put into place in Belgian waters, representing a noteworthy step forward for offshore wind efficiency in the market compared to previous 3.3 MW installations,' a statement read.
Located 23 kilometers off the Belgian port of Zeebruges, Norther will provide clean energy to around 400,000 Belgian households when fully commissioned.
The farm is being built by Norther NV which is a joint venture between Belgian Elicio which holds a 50 percent stake, and Dutch Eneco and London-based DGE, a subsidiary of Mitsubishi Corporation, with 25 percent interests each. Rotterdam-based Van Oord Delta Marine Consultants is also a project partner.
According to the press release, Norther marks MHI Vestas' fourth project in Belgium. Additionally, the V164 platform is nearing a major milestone as the Danish-Japanese joint venture is preparing to install the 200th turbine in the coming days.
