Spain's natural gas demand hit a daily record high with 1,502.1 Gigawatt hours (GWh) on Wednesday, Spanish LNG terminal operator Enagas announced on Thursday.
According to Enagas, the consumption of natural gas for household, businesses and industrial use reached the highest level since 2012.
Spain's national demand for natural gas, including electricity generation rose to 1,502.1 GWh, a historic high daily record, due to the effects of cold weather. The country is coping with this increased demand by using its underground storage facilities and regasification plants, according to the press release.
Conventional demand for natural gas, targeted at households, commercial and industrial consumption reached 1,229.2 GWh, representing the fourth-highest recorded value ever, according to the Spanish utility.
'Natural gas deliveries for electricity generation of 272.9 GWh demonstrates the fundamental role that natural gas has for electricity supplies in case of low hydro-power generation' the press release read.
Enagas proclaimed that underground storage has been the first flexibility tool used to cope with demand. Moreover, two regasification plants are also providing flexibility in a higher demand and lower imports scenario.
The company noted in its press release that Spain's State Meteorological Agency forecasts low temperatures for the next few days which could result in increased natural gas demand.
