French energy giant Total abandoned its controversial shale gas exploration project in northern Denmark as it failed to find sufficient deposits of gas/oil, according to Danish energy agency Monday.
Danish media reported that the Danish Energy Agency announced late Monday that Total decided to pull out of its project in Jutland which is now permanently shut down.
'The drilling results have not fulfilled the company’s expectations of the reservoir conditions and seam thickness. There will therefore be no further work with the drilling, which is now shut down permanently,' the Energy Agency said.
Total said in May that it abandoned its shale gas exploration in New Zealand for the same reason.
The French company was granted an exploration license in June 2014 to explore in Jutland which became a center of anti-fracking protests.
Greenpeace and the Danish Society of Nature Conservation protested against the projects in the region.
Danish Energy and Climate Minister Lars Christian Lilleholt announced Monday that no new shale gas exploration projects will be approved in Denmark any time soon.
