Italian energy company Eni made a new discovery of gas and condensates offshore Libya in the Gamma prospect, in Contract Area D, 140 kilometers offshore Tripoli, in Libya, the company announced Wednesday.
According to company's press release, the drilling of the Gamma prospect is part of the “near field” exploration strategy of Eni, targeting opportunities, which if successful, 'can exploit synergies with existing infrastructures reducing the time to market and provide additional gas to the local market and for export.'
The discovery is closely located to previously developed fields, 15 km southwest of the Bouri field and 5 km north of the Bahr Essalam field, the press release said.
The well, drilled to 150 meters of water depth, reached a total depth of 2,981 meters (9,780 feet) and encountered gas and condensates in the Metlaoui group of Eocene age, according to the press release.
Eni proclaimed the well has the capacity to produce in excess of 7,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day (Boepd) and represents Eni's further discoveries in Libyan offshore Area D, following earlier discoveries in 2015.
Eni, through its subsidiary Eni North Africa BV, is the operator of Contract Area D with a 100 percent working interest in the exploration phase, the press release said.
Eni has been present in Libya since 1959 and currently produces 350,000 Boepd in equity in the country.
