One of Turkey's leading energy companies, Zorlu Energy, along with Sharekat Kahrabaa Mohavazat AL-Quds AL-Urdineyyah (Sharekat) owned by Jeruselam District Electricity Company of Palestine (JDECO) signed a joint venture agreement to construct and operate a solar power plant to provide Palestine with electricity, the company announced on Thursday.
The power plant plans to have a total of 100 megawatts (MW) of solar power capacity in the electricity-strapped region.
JDECO already provides a quarter of Palestine's electricity and aims at continuing to intensify and diversify its investments in solar energy.
Turkey's Zorlu is also anxious to broaden its renewable portfolio internationally.
'With 25 years of renewable energy experience, we have decided to realize further investments abroad,' Ahmet Zorlu, chairman of Zorlu Energy said in a statement.
With this investment in Palestine, 'we [Zorlu] have taken another important step towards our goal of leading the development of solar energy in our region,' he said.
Previously, Turkey's Zorlu Energy signed a memorandum of understanding with JDECO for the construction and operation of solar power plants, the company announced in July 2017.
