The Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) on Thursday urged the international community to urgently help Syrian refugees and back a political solution to the crisis.
Secretary-General Yousef bin Ahmad Al-Othaimeen, speaking at a conference regarding Syria and the region held in Brussels, said attempts to find a political solution to the crisis should be supported.
The civil war, which has been ongoing since 2011, led to the deaths of about a million people and approximately 13 million found themselves in need.
'Some 11 million people were forced to leave their homes,' he said, calling on the global community to create an 'urgent fund' to help refugees.
Al-Othaimeen pointed out that the OIC supports a political solution that would contribute to establishing a Syrian state based on pluralism, democracy and civil system, while respecting human rights.
