The U.K.'s electricity system will be able to fully operate with zero carbon by 2025, National Grid Electricity System Operator (ESO) said Monday.
ESO plans to transform the operation of the U.K.’s electricity system by 2025 and 'put in place the innovative systems, products and services to ensure that the network is ready to handle 100 percent zero carbon,' said Fintan Slye, director of ESO.
Introducing new products and services will also help reduce the overall cost of operating the system and drive down costs for consumers, Slye added.
Slye acknowledged that 'zero carbon operation of the electricity system by 2025 means a fundamental change' to how the country's system was designed to operate.
The operator believes integrating newer technologies across the system, from large-scale offshore wind to domestic scale solar panels is key to reaching their goal.
Additional steps include increasing demand-side participation, while using new smart digital systems to manage and control the system in real-time, Slye said.
