Electricite de France and Abu Dhabi-based renewables company Masdar launched a 200 megawatt (MW) facility, which is the third and most recent phase of the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park, local media reported on Tuesday.
The park will help Dubai's goal of generating 10 percent of its electricity from renewables by 2020.
The Solar Park, a Dubai Electricity and Water Authority project, is a massive solar park that intends to generate 1,000 MW by 2020 and 5,000 MW by 2030.
The park is located on a 77 square kilometer site in Seih Al-Dahal, about 50 kilometers south of Dubai.
In mid-2017, the Dubai Electricity and Water Authority awarded the contract to build the fourth 700 MW phase of the solar park.
Renewables development has escalated in the U.A.E., which is a member of the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries. In addition, Saudi Arabia, OPEC’s biggest producer, as well as Jordan are making inroads towards renewables deployment.
