Twenty four new electricity power stations were put online in Turkey in October, according to energy ministry officials.
Owing to the 24 new stations, Turkey's total power capacity increased by 0.8 percent. The new stations have added 527 megawatts, MW, to Turkey's electricity production in October and with this rise the country reached 68,719 MW total installed capacity.
Five thermal power stations with 416 MW of capacity in total have become operational in October. The thermal plants generated 80 percent of the country's electricity production in October and the remainder was produced by eight biomass and geothermal plants generating 59 MW, six hydropower plants with 30 MW and three wind power plants with 20 MW of power.
Since January to October, Turkey put online 192 electricity power stations. In September alone, 20 power plants came online generating 283 MW of capacity, officials said.
As a developing country, Turkey's electricity consumption continues to rise each year. Consequently it has increasing energy needs but aims to decrease foreign dependency with the use of its domestic resources. The country is now attempting to increase its installed electricity capacity to 110,000 MW by 2023.
