The number of countries and businesses in the U.K.-led Powering Past Coal Alliance reached 58 from 25 a month ago, the U.K.'s Department for Business, Energy & Industrial Strategy announced Tuesday.
At the UN climate change talks on Nov. 16, the U.K., in partnership with Canada, launched the Powering Past Coal Alliance - a global alliance to phase out coal electricity to accelerate clean growth and climate protection.
The Powering Past Coal Alliance, which included 25 partners as of Nov. 16, significantly increased on Dec. 13 to 58 signatories.
'Coal-fired power plants produce almost 40 percent of global electricity today, making carbon pollution from coal a leading contributor to climate change,' the department noted.
It underlined that as a result, phasing out traditional coal power is 'one of the most important steps' governments can take to tackle climate change.
'Countries moving to low-carbon, climate-resilient economies are already seeing environmental, economic and human health benefits. Our coalition wants to help accelerate that transition,' it added.
